It allows a track to be delayed by any amount from 1 to 225 samples. At a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz, one sample is one 44100th of a second, so a millisecond is 44.1 samples. I found that delays of up to 20 samples were the most effective, but knew that in the higher frequencies there is more complex stuff going on. What our brains decode as directional information is derived from the varying audio spectra and delays produced when sounds come from different directions. The complexity of it increases with frequency.

It's a common dilemma, and one that many of us face! In an ideal world we'd all have separate rooms for 2-channel and 5.1 listening, but unfortunately most of us must compromise. I have a 5.1 setup with Mordaunt Short 900 series speakers, a Kef PSW3500 sub and a Marantz SR5400 receiver, and use a Squeezebox Classic as source. It's pretty decent for music, and you can experiment with the various surround modes on the receiver to see what suits you best (I find DTS Neo 6 works best for me). However, I run RS8s with a sub £1000 amp (cost me £850) and they are great. It is recommended in an ideal budget split, that you spend 2 to 3 times the cost of the amp on speakers, so you're good to go to £3000 with a £1000 amp. Some people say that the RS/RX 8 isn't worth it over the RS/RX 6. However, that way I look at it is this; you get an extra driver with the '8' over the '6'. In the case of the RS series, that means that you get a dedicated midrange driver --- in the RS6, the midrange is shared with a bass driver. The ability to provide 5.1 sound had been one of the key reasons for using 70 mm for prestige screenings. The provision of 5.1 digital sound on 35 mm significantly reduced the use of the very expensive 70 mm format. Digital sound and the 5.1 format were introduced in 1990, by KODAK and Optical Radiation Corporation, with releases of and using the CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) format. 5.1 digital surround, in the forms of Dolby Digital AC3 and DTS, started appearing on several mid 90s Laserdisc releases, with among the earliest being and (the latter having both AC3 and DTS versions). Many DVD releases have Dolby Digital tracks up to 5.1 channels, due to the implementation of Dolby Digital in the development of the DVD format. In addition, some DVDs have DTS tracks with most being 5.1 channel mixes (a few releases, however, have 6.1 “” tracks).

Bear in mind that with the pure direct mode (on Yamaha amps anyway and I suspect others), the only speakers you're using are the front L&R, so if you have front speakers with a poor low frequency response, you'll be loosing any low frequencies; when playing in a 5.1 mode, the sub is in play and you don't loose the low frequencies. With speakers such as the RX6s, that shouldn't be a problem though. I prefer to listen to stereo music in the 5.1 mode and rarely use the 'pure direct' setting.

Get a good OPPO or other decent brand bluray player that will decode all the various disc types and buy some stuff with your speakers set up right. There is a stack of stuff worth hearing.
